The history of yoga.

According to archaeologists, the ancient 5,000-year old figures carved in stone which were found in India, represent the image of a meditating yogi. The figure is shown seated with legs crossed and resting on his knees with his hands. The discoverer of this blueprint – an archaeologist Sir John Marshall - called this figure Shiva Pashupati. The first written mentions of yoga are found in ancient religious book "Rigveda" - one of four collections of Vedas - the sacred books of Indian priests (Brahmans). Scientists estimate the age of this book is approximately 3,500 years (though, the Indians believe that these books existed since the beginning of creation). And this is not the only descriptions of the concepts and teachings of Yoga of such impressive antiquity. In various ways, the term "yoga" is used in the well-known Bhagavad Gita. Gita is a holy book of Hindu culture and literature monument of the IV century B.C. Among the many possible topics of yoga in the Gita, the greatest attention is paid to the following three:

Karma Yoga: yoga of activities

Jnana Yoga: yoga of knowledge
Bhakti Yoga: yoga of devotion

An influential commentator on Indian literature - Madhusūdana Saraswati divided eighteen chapters of Gita into three sections, six chapters each. According to his method of dividing the first six chapters are Karma Yoga, which is the intermediate part, a bridge between actions and their results, and the last six on the contrary have the attitude to the immediate result that Saraswati called knowledge (Jnana). Mid is the six chapters of Bhakti. Later this system was accepted by some and rejected by other commentators.

Before you begin to reasonably know about yoga, there is something more than just "yoga - this is from India." It has only once get acquainted with the history of yoga as a desire to learn more asanas and pranayama will move deeply into your heart, where nothing will be able to beat this out, even the incredible complexity of some of the exercises.

So, let's start.

In the never-existing land Arctis, the most ancient civilization of the planet, a knowledge was born. When Arctis disappeared after the accident, the survivors of several generations of residents gave it to the best minds in three continents - Hittis, Pacifis and Atlantis. But the time has passed, and these worlds has gone, too. And the knowledge had passed in Ancient Egypt, and then - in the pre-Aryan Indian culture. People of pre-Aryan India created images, which in the light of modern science may be called the images of yogis. It was four and a half thousand years ago. A thousand years B.C. ago, in the valley of the Ganges, the Indo-Aryan culture appeared. In the 5-6 centuries B.C., its sages created the sacred books of the Vedas, then – comments of Upanishads, giving a powerful impetus to the development of philosophical thought. Time passed, and the idea was vested in action: so, the six brahman darshanas, six philosophical systems were born. Their names are Mimansa, Vedanta, Sankhya, Yoga, Nyaya and Vaisheshika. Yoga is considered by all other systems as a general method and means of knowing the world.

As a philosophical knowledge, it came to us from the last third of the first millennium B.C., and as the myth - from the ancient civilization. It is even older than the most ancient ones in the sense of being born from the legend. Do you feel what you are going to do? Over this thing the time has no power. In the language of yoga the world itself is talking to you, in all its firmness, which attracts and impresses.

In the modern world everything is much more prosaic. If not take into account everything written above, one can even think yoga is nothing more than fashionable global passion having come from India. In America, Europe, Russia and Asia, there are a lot of schools and branches, these are multiply as flies. If look at this from outside, it will be unpleasant. “What does it have, that the whole world is mad of it? Nonsense.” No. You just look at this from inside – tantra, karma, yantra, laya will help you, and all the ancient continents, too.

Let's apply to historical roots, yoga learning sources. Scientific tradition imputes the separation of yoga learning as independent system to a legendary Indian sage Patanjali (11-1 centuries B.C.). Patanjali separated yoga in the independent system on the basis of already existent knowledge and experience collected by yogi experts. In his transactions called “Yoga-Sutra”, Patanjali expounds philosophy and practice of that yoga, which is considered the classic one by the most of explorers. According to ancient sages' tradition, Patanjali does not pretends to an authorship in creation of yoga philosophic system. He just collects oral data reached him, and commented on these in the spirit of a unified doctrine. Philosophical terminology and interpretation of the practice of yoga given in the “Yoga-Sutra" is also coordinated with the authoritative texts of the Vedas and Upanishads.

In the original teachings of Patanjali, Yoga is divided into eight parts:
1) yama - restrictions in relationships with people and with nature;
2) niyama - Instructions of lifestyle;
3) asana - a variety of postures and body poses;
4) pranayama - breathing exercises associated with energy accumulation;
5) pratyahara - control and easing of the perception flow, mental relaxation;

6) dharana - concentration of thought;
7) dhyana - meditation, controllable stream of consciousness;
8) samadhi - the perfection of mind, knowledge of absolute truth. Changed, ecstatic state of consciousness.

If the nose is not breathing.

In yoga, breathing through the nose is paid much attention. The fact is that the nasopharynx is located closely to the cerebral hemispheres. Therefore, active nasal breathing stimulates the frontal lobes and, therefore, can awaken the dormant areas of the brain. According to observations of yogis, it develops the mind, improves memory and concentration, and sometimes awakens the hidden human capabilities, such as intuition and even clairvoyance.

In yoga, there is a special procedure of nose purification (neti), which is an integral part of the 6 main yogic purification practices (shatkarma-kriya). Here is a simple version of it, which does not require special preliminary training or special yoga asceticism.

So, the first step is to rinse the nostrils with water, releasing them from lumps of solidified nasal mucus. To do this, lightly draw water into the nostrils, and then forcibly blow it out. Usually, together with mucus, it also washes away the dust and dirt filtered by nose during breathing.

Then, perform the second step - nasal water abstersion. In yoga it is called Jal-neti. Fill a small teapot with warm, a little bit salty water (the ratio is 1 teaspoon to 0.5 liters of water). Stand over the sink, and while bending your head to the right insert the spout into the left nostril. Then, slowly pour water which gradually begins to flow from the right nostril. At this time, breathe through the mouth. If everything is done correctly, the water automatically flows from the bottom nostril, washing the nasopharynx. After a short rest, incline your head to the left and repeat the procedure from the right nostril to the left.

Lavage is a useful procedure, but remember that our nose is still for breathing. Therefore we need the third step - cleaning of the nose and thin nasal passages with air. This is carried out by the following exercise: inhale gently through the «difficult» nostril and exhale through the «easy» one (anuloma-viloma pranayama). Repeat several times, then relax a little.

The effect of this exercise is based on the fact that a thin stream of cool air activates circulation in the nasopharynx system, and it helps cleaning the nostril very quickly. It is useful to carry out the procedure of nose cleaning just before the exercise. Cold air slightly narrows the blood vessels, that is, acts as the nasal drops, but unlike medicines, it does not have side effects. If you do the exercise regularly, it's possible to completely get rid of colds with time.

Sometimes the «difficult» nostril opens if you lie on the opposite side for 3-5 minutes. A regular massage of nose wings near the bridge of nose is also helpful. Remember that nasal breathing is very helpful for the brain, so it is better to try to clean the «difficult» nostril. Gradually the habit of nasal breathing is fixed, and eventually you'll breathe by nose absolutely freely.

The world's capital of Yoga

Rishikesh is an Indian city which fairly gained the name of world's capital of yoga.

Being edged from three sides by the foothills, the city lies at an altitude of 356 meters above sea level. The Holy Ganges runs through the city, and along its sandy shores, there are numerous ashrams. This is a perfect place for those who wish to temporarily leave the bustle of modern life and explore yoga, meditation and other aspects of Hinduism. The city gets its popularity also by the fact that in the sixties "The Beatles" came here to study with Maharishi Mahesh.

Rishikesh is one of the places directly connected to the Holy Ganges river. According to Hindu beliefs, the Ganges was born by Shiva and represents its vital force. For Hindus the river Ganges is presented in feminine gender and is associated with the female deity - the Ganges Atri, whose symbolic sculptural image is displayed on one of the guts on the river-bank. A gut is a ritual staircase, descending to the holy pond, where the believers make a ceremony of gifts and purification (Puja). Believers light lamps brought to the Ganges merge into a sea of lights, and it is impossible to remain indifferent while looking at this great unity of believers' spirit with the holy river.

In numerous restaurants of Rishikesh, it is impossible to find meat dishes, and a huge fish swimming in the waters of the Ganges is not caught by people.
Fish of the Ganges is considered sacred, and many pilgrims feed it because it is considered a welfare.
The city is also considered to be a «gateway» to the Himalayas. It starts out the routes deep into the mountain system, to a famous mountain temples. This place is considered sacred, and on the beliefs, a meditation held here will certainly lead to the achievement of nirvana.

Two parts of the city, separated by the Ganges, are joined by a famous suspension bridge - Lakshman Jhoola. According to beliefs, the suspension bridge has been existing here since the times of Ramayana and every time someone stepped on it, the bridge began to swing heavily.

In Rishikesh, they pray daily to all 33 thousands of Hindu gods, however not all of these gods are dedicated with the temples.

The most part of the city temples are dedicated to the Vishnu and Shiva gods, of course. Thus, the Bharat Mandir - the oldest temple in the city is dedicated to the Vishnu god.
A temple of Nilkanth Mahadev is built on the place where Shiva drank a poison threatened to destroy all life. Many ashrams offer their assistance to those wishing to try their-selves in yoga and meditation. Signboards glisten everywhere. There are large many-storied ashrams, as well as small huts also proudly named ashrams.

But one ashram stands out from the others for its blooming and well-groomed beauty. This is Parmat Niketan. Now it is the most famous and largest ashram in Rishikesh.
It seems that this is where the legendary "Beatles" met the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi guru, by what made a great contribution to the glory of Rishikesh.

On the background of the whole plain city, Parmath Niketan sparkles like an emerald in the sun. Lots of flowers and greens, beautiful fairways and mighty Banyans, marble statues and openwork lattice. On the main entrance, in the waters of Ganges, there is a white statue of Shiva, by which every evening at sunset a colorful ceremony with songs and dances takes place. This ashram has even a website, parmath.com.
Of course, on the streets of Rishikesh you can find many yogis, or, to say it more precisely, sadhu, strangers. An essential features of them are orange garb, many beads and a big mug for handouts. The greater part of the day they spend on the streets, sitting under the hot sun and unobtrusively asking for help. Although not all of them are carefree and happy. Most of them have to literally fight for survival, as there are not so much people who are willing to help them. Ongoing shortages of food, care, etc is a common event. Despite of this, none of them had lost spirit, no one is embittered to the world. They are all friendly and good-natured, always happy to sit with you and chat. For someone who arrived to India at first time, it is unusual to see such good and always smiling people. Entrusting their fate to divine providence, these nameless heroes bravely go on unknown ways, remaining faithful to their ideals. People for whom religion is not fun and not an empty phrase but a living reality.

Yoga Tourism in Turkey

Turkish tourism in search of an alternative to the system of "all inclusive" applied to a "yoga tourism." Professor Akif Manaf, the founder of the Academy of Yoga in Turkey said that the latest trend in tourism is to combine leisure with the procedures of the SPA and yoga. Yoga Academy periodically organizes the "yoga camps" in different parts of the country, to give people a chance to experience nature via yoga. Many people go to the mountains and the nature to practice yoga, to get rid of the negative effects of urban life. Mr. Manaf said that the Academy organizes the year-round camps, where the courses last from two days to a week.

For example, the program of yoga seminars may include the following events: “Practice, recreation, swimming, traveling on the yacht, delicious vegetarian Turkish cuisine, Hammams (local baths), communication. These would be the days full of valuable practice, rest, sun, sea, communication with friends and surrounding elements. You would get the answers to your questions, revise your practice, attitude towards yourself and surrounding space, widen your picture of universe, using the "puzzles" which will form in your mind as a result of such the informational-practical seminar.”

Today there are camps in Antalya, Fethiye, Kemer, Bodrum, and the mountains of Ida.

Bhakti Yoga - the science of our era

For centuries, Bhakti was followed by the great sages, holy men and kings. Prominent poets of the past dedicated wonderful poems and songs to the glory of God, and praised a pure love for the Lord.
Nowadays, the Bhakti Yoga (a relationship with God through a faithful service of him) becomes even more relevant and valuable than thousands years ago. Because now people have neither the time nor the ability to meet the requirements of any other host system of Yoga. But the method of Bhakti is quite simple. The Bhakti Yoga will help us develop a truly high qualities in ourselves and find what everyone strives living in a material world - the eternal life, eternal happiness, and eternal knowledge.
Practicing of Bhakti-yoga is available to everyone, whoever he could be. There's no need to retract from the world, keep house, family and work or go to great expense. You need only one – to give Lord Krishna the most important place in our lives. He should be the one we devoted all of our thoughts, desires and deeds. We will achieve this if we repeat, with love and devotion, a sacred name of God – the Hare Krishna Maha-mantra, follow the prescribed limits, read the Bhaktivedanty Swami Prabhupady books and eat only what was first presented to our Lord as a sign of our love.

International Festival of Yoga in Bali

Despite of the frustration of Muslim religious figures, on the Indonesian island of Bali, the International Festival of Yoga was open in March, 2009. Since January, it was announced that the Muslims are prohibited from engaging in yoga, as it includes elements of Hindu religious rites - such as reading mantras. Nevertheless, the festival was held, and that's great.

Organizers of the International Festival argue that it stands outside of any religious teachings and denominations, and aims to not only deliver the benefits of a popular recreational practice to the widest possible audience, but also to prove that yoga is not contrary to Islam. «This festival has a universal value. It does not belong to any religious teachings, »- said the representative of the festival organizing committee Susi Andrini.

According to organizers, the festival took more than 500 people from the United States, Germany, Sweden, Japan, China and other countries.
